the film
MAGIC is a film about connection. Our connection to ourselves. Our connection to each other. Our connection to technology. Our connection to the natural world and our connection to liberation. At its heart, MAGIC is a love story about community, change and finding your voice; with music at the centre – our heartbeat and backbone.
Through this story we will explore how humans numb through the discomfort of being human by finding ways to escape. Looking ahead to a more AI integrated future, we question our direction of travel and aim to seek truth about what’s coming. How can we stay connected to our humanity in the face of so much distraction? How can we lean into the discomfort of our contrasting experiences to grow, heal and move towards collective liberation together?
MAGIC will showcase the world through a colourful, queer and vibrant lens. Every colour will be mindfully selected to inspire associations and emotions. Visually I want to create a film that feels like a collection of magical moments and an unconventional fairy-tale adventure. We will hopefully feel like the story is unravelling before us, filled with action, divinely timed, and yet somehow over in a flash.
DIRECTOR’s STATEMENT
Representation matters. Stories of liberation give us strength, they teach us how to resist and thrive through struggle. Despite the film’s deeper messages, the tone is funny and entertaining, with a strong backdrop of hope. I want people to laugh at the awkwardness and see themselves reflected in our characters. At this intense time, it feels important to have a laugh and spread some joy too! So keep that in mind as we get into it…
It’s no secret that capitalism and extractivism have driven our world into climate catastrophe. Until recently, many in the West have been unaware of the impacts of our privileged lifestyles, born into systemic racism and learning that the Global South is simply “poor”. Now with technology circulating information more quickly than ever, many people are waking up to the reality that much of the Global South is not “poor”, they are exploited. Genocide, slavery and unthinkable acts of harm continue to be fuelled by our colonial greed and constant demand for resources; whilst big businesses benefit from our distraction and division.
Freeing ourselves from the capitalist colonial ideas of individualism, greed, and perfectionism, I pray we can move towards collective care, solidarity and inspire new directions of travel. Through laughter, music and sweet serendipity, MAGIC will highlight a world of community care and hope through healing. Never underestimate the ripples our actions can have and how time and time again movements have shifted our reality!
By slowing down and disconnecting from what no longer serves, we make space to connect with ourselves, our humanity and the magic of life.
To the adventure, we’re in this together,
Dom 💙
